What is Sophrology?

A gentle approach to reconnecting body and mind

If you have never heard of sophrology before, you are not alone.

Sophrology is still relatively new and little known in the UK, while in France and other parts of continental Europe it has been practised for decades and has become a familiar approach to wellbeing, stress management and personal development.

At its heart, sophrology is a mind-body practice. It brings together breathing, gentle movement, relaxation, body awareness, concentration and visualisation to help you become more aware of yourself and develop greater calm, balance and resilience.

Where does sophrology come from?

Sophrology was developed in the 1960s by Alfonso Caycedo, a Colombian neuropsychiatrist working in Spain. He was interested in consciousness and in finding ways of helping people reconnect with themselves through both the body and the mind.

His approach drew inspiration from Western relaxation techniques and psychology, as well as practices such as yoga, meditation and Zen. Over time, he developed these influences into a structured method of exercises that could be practised in everyday life.

Today, sophrology is particularly well established in France and is also practised in countries including Switzerland, Spain and Belgium. It is used in a variety of settings, from individualwellbeing work to education, sport, healthcare and the workplace.

So, what happens during a sophrology session?

One of the things I love about sophrology is its simplicity.

You don't need any special equipment, and you don't need to be able to meditate, stretch or “switch off” your mind.

I guide you through simple exercises, usually practised sitting or standing, using your breathing, gentle movements, relaxation, body awareness and visualisation. The exercises are adapted to you and to what you need at that particular moment.

The aim is not to make you forget your difficulties or to force yourself to think positively.

It is about learning to pause, become aware of what is happening within you and develop practical ways of responding differently.

With regular practice, the techniques can become tools that you can use in your everyday life, when you feel stressed, overwhelmed, tired or simply need to reconnect with yourself.

Reconnecting body and mind

We often live predominantly in our heads.

We think, plan, anticipate, worry and solve problems, while becoming less aware of what our body is telling us.

Yet our body often knows before our mind does.

Tension, shallow breathing, fatigue, restlessness or difficulty sleeping can all be signals that we need to pay attention to ourselves.

Sophrology creates a bridge between the body and the mind. By becoming more aware of your breathing, sensations, thoughts and emotions, you can begin to understand yourself differently and recognise what you need.

This is particularly valuable when you are experiencing stress, overwhelm, exhaustion, loss of confidence or a period of change.

I listen to understand your situation and help you access your inner resources. Depending on your goals, I use sophrology, NLP and coaching, either individually or in combination.

My approach is gentle, practical and personalised. I provide a safe, non-judgemental space for you to slow down, gain clarity and explore ways to move forward.

Why sophrology?

For me, sophrology is not about giving you another thing to add to your already busy life.

It is about giving you simple tools that you can take with you.

Tools to help you slow down.

  • To breathe.

  • To release tension.

  • To become more present.

  • To reconnect with your body.

  • To regain confidence in your own abilities.

  • And, perhaps most importantly, to reconnect with the resources that already exist within you.

Sophrology is not about becoming a different person. It is about becoming more connected to yourself.

And sometimes, that is where change begins.
